Ferranti was a British electrical engineering and equipment firm founded in 1883 by Sebastian Ziani de Ferranti as S Z de Ferranti, later restructured as Ferranti Ltd in 1901. Over its eleven-decade history, the company evolved from a manufacturer of alternators, transformers, and switchgear into a diversified industrial conglomerate spanning power distribution systems, domestic appliances, radio and television sets, semiconductors, and defence electronics. It produced the world's first commercially available computer, the Ferranti Mark I, in 1951, and became Europe's first silicon diode manufacturer in 1955. After acquiring International Signal and Control in 1987 and renaming itself Ferranti International plc, the company collapsed into bankruptcy in 1993 following the discovery of massive fraud at its American subsidiary.
