Croatia Airlines Ltd. is the state-owned flag carrier airline of Croatia founded on 7 August 1989 as Zagal (Zagreb Airlines) and rebranded as Croatia Airlines in 1990 following Croatia’s first democratic elections. The airline conducted its inaugural commercial flight on 5 May 1991 from Zagreb to Split, coinciding with the Croatian War of Independence. It joined the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in 1992, launched its first international service to Frankfurt in 1993, and became a regional member of the Star Alliance in 1996 before achieving full membership in 2010.
