Spirit Airlines, Inc. was an American ultra-low-cost carrier headquartered in Miramar, Florida. Founded in 1964 as Clippert Trucking Company, the company shifted to aviation in 1980 as Charter One Airlines, offering inclusive tour packages to leisure destinations. In 1992, it rebranded as Spirit Airlines and commenced scheduled passenger services. A defining transformation came in 2007 under CEO Ben Baldanza, when the airline pioneered the U.S. ultra-low-cost carrier model, unbundling fares to offer rock-bottom base prices with optional extras for baggage, seat selection, and onboard amenities. The airline went public on NASDAQ in 2011 and grew to become the seventh-largest U.S. carrier, operating an all-Airbus fleet serving destinations across the United States, Caribbean, and Latin America from focus cities including Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. Brand messaging was anchored by the early slogan "Catch the Spirit!" and later by the value proposition "Less Money, More Go.", reflecting its mission to democratise air travel through radical affordability. After two Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings in 2024 and 2025, the airline ceased operations on 2 May 2026.
