Bombay Sapphire is a brand of gin that was first launched in 1987 by IDV. Created by Michel Roux of Carillon Importers—the visionary behind Absolut Vodka—the brand was conceived to revitalise the gin category with a super-premium positioning. Its name pays homage to the Star of Bombay, a 182-carat violet-blue sapphire from Sri Lanka, which inspired both the brand identity and the iconic translucent blue bottle. The liquid is based on a 1761 recipe from Warrington distiller Thomas Dakin, enhanced by master blender Ian Hamilton with two exotic botanicals—grains of paradise and cubeb berries—bringing the total to ten. Distilled using a proprietary vapour-infusion process in Carterhead stills, the gin delivers a lighter, more aromatic profile than traditional London Dry styles. In 1997, Bacardi acquired the brand, and in 2014 opened the Laverstoke Mill distillery in Hampshire as the brand home. The core portfolio spans the flagship Bombay Sapphire, the exotic Bombay Sapphire East, the fruit-infused Bombay Bramble, and the ultra-premium Star of Bombay. Brand messaging evolved from the 2018 creative platform "Stir Creativity" to the 2025 immersive campaign "Step Into The Blue", reflecting its identity as a canvas for cocktail artistry and luminous experiences.
