Ouma Rusks is a legendary South African brand born from a single church-loan and a family recipe. In 1939, during the Great Depression, Elizabeth Ann “Nannie” Greyvensteyn used a half-crown grant from her Molteno pastor to bake buttermilk rusks from a trusted family recipe. Sold first at church bazaars, demand quickly outgrew her kitchen; by 1941 the brand secured South Africa’s first IDC start-up loan. Originally marketed as Uitspan and Outspan, the name eventually settled on Ouma Rusks, honoring the grandmother who started it all. The slogan “Dip ’n Ouma” became a national invitation to dunk the crunchy, twice-baked biscuit into tea or coffee—a ritual as beloved as the braai. Today, under RCL Foods, the brand still bakes in Molteno on the original Friedenheim farm, offering flavors from classic Buttermilk to Muesli and Condensed Milk, and remains the country’s most iconic rusk.
