Quavers debuted in the United Kingdom in 1968, originally produced by Smith's at their factory on Newark Road in Lincoln before passing to Walkers in 1997. Named after the musical note, these curly, deep-fried potato-based snacks were engineered to be feather-light and melt-in-the-mouth, a texture closer to prawn crackers than conventional crisps. The core range has revolved around cheese—still commanding 85 percent of sales—supplemented by flavours such as Smoky Bacon, Salt & Vinegar, Prawn Cocktail, and BBQ. Manufactured for over half a century at the Lincoln site, where 1.6 million packets roll off the line daily, Quavers are crafted from potato starch extracted during Walkers' crisp-making process. The brand's slogan evolution is as playful as its shape: from the generous promise "You get a lovely lot of Quavers in a bag" and the pun-filled "Do me a Quaver," to the tactile declaration "They're floaty light!" and the confident "The flavour of a Quaver is never known to waver"—a century-old musical namesake that still dances on the tongue.
