Continental Airlines was a major United States airline founded in 1934 and eventually headquartered in Houston, Texas. Originating as Varney Speed Lines in El Paso, the airline was renamed Continental Air Lines in 1937 and grew into the nation's fourth-largest carrier by revenue passenger miles. Under the visionary leadership of Robert Six, the airline pioneered jet service in the West in 1959 and introduced its iconic gold-and-blue livery. Its core offerings encompassed scheduled passenger and cargo services across the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific, alongside subsidiary operations including Continental Micronesia based in Guam. The airline operated through three major hubs at Newark, Houston, and Cleveland, serving over 260 destinations with a fleet of more than 340 aircraft. Brand messaging evolved from the 1967 golden age positioning "The Proud Bird With The Golden Tail" through the cheeky 1975 promise "We Really Move Our Tail For You" and the 1990s value proposition "More Airline for Your Money" to the enduring 1998 declaration "Work Hard. Fly Right.", reflecting its transformation from a regional challenger to a globally respected carrier. In 2010, Continental merged with United Airlines, and the brand was fully retired by 2012.
