WestJet Airlines Ltd. is a Canadian airline founded in 1996 by Clive Beddoe, David Neeleman, Mark Hill, Tim Morgan and Donald Bell in Calgary, Alberta. Modelled after Southwest Airlines, the carrier began operations on 29 February 1996 with three Boeing 737-200 aircraft serving five Western Canadian cities. It pioneered low-cost travel in Canada, cutting airfares in half and expanding the flying population by more than 50 per cent. The airline went public in 1999, launched regional subsidiary WestJet Encore in 2013, and entered the long-haul market with Boeing 787 Dreamliners in 2018. In 2019, Onex Corporation acquired the airline for CAD 5 billion, and in 2025 it completed the integration of Sunwing Airlines, unifying all narrowbody operations under the WestJet brand.

Core offerings include scheduled passenger flights, WestJet Vacations package holidays, WestJet Cargo, and the WestJet Rewards loyalty programme. Brand messaging has evolved from the long-standing employee-centric promise Owners Care to the 2024 global platform Where Your Story Takes Off, reflecting the airline’s mission to enrich lives through memorable travel experiences and its return to guest-focused hospitality roots.
