Mr. Zog's Sex Wax's Slogans & Taglines

Mr. Zog's Sex Wax was founded in 1972 by Frederick Charles Herzog III—known as Mr. Zog—and chemist Nate Skinner in Goleta, California. At the time, Zog ran a small surf shop near Santa Barbara Airport, where he shaped boards and sought a better grip solution. Teaming up with Skinner, who worked in a neighbouring building, the duo spent months refining a high-performance surfboard wax formula in a rented garage. Zog personally tested each batch in the water, and when the formula was ready, he loaded his Ford pickup and drove the California coast, pitching to surf shops from Santa Cruz to San Diego.

The brand's core product is surfboard wax, offered in temperature-specific formulas for cold, cool, warm, and tropical waters, alongside complementary lines such as snowboard wax, hockey wax, and a range of surf accessories and apparel. The iconic name and label were created by artist Hank Pitcher, blending provocative humour with genuine product quality.

From the outset, the label carried the slogans "The Best for your Stick" and "Never Spoils." In 1974, the brand pushed boundaries with the playful ad line "Expose Yourself to Sex Wax." Decades later, "The Best for your Stick Since 1972" remains the enduring motto, embodying a brand that grew from a garage operation into a global symbol of surf culture.
