📖 Branding Insight & Heritage:
Sealink was a British ferry company operating from 1970 to 1984. The brand originated as the marketing name for the British Rail Shipping and International Services Division, which managed railway-owned ferry services since 1948. In 1970, the division adopted the Sealink identity to unify cross-Channel and Irish Sea operations. As vehicle traffic grew, the fleet transitioned from passenger-only vessels to roll-on/roll-off car ferries. In 1979, the business was incorporated as Sealink UK Ltd in preparation for privatisation. On 27 July 1984, the UK Government sold the company to Sea Containers for £66 million, rebranding it as Sealink British Ferries. In 1990, Stena Line acquired the operation, and the Sealink name was retired in 1995.
The company operated services from Dover, Southampton, and Harwich to France, Belgium, and the Netherlands; from Holyhead and Fishguard to Ireland; and from Portsmouth and Weymouth to the Channel Islands and Isle of Wight.
