Eastern Air Lines was a major American airline founded in 1926 by Harold Pitcairn as Pitcairn Aviation, reorganised as Eastern Air Transport in 1930, and renamed Eastern Air Lines in 1934. Under the legendary leadership of World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker from 1934 to 1963, the airline pioneered transcontinental and Caribbean routes, becoming the first U.S. airline to fly the Boeing 727 and the Lockheed L-1011 Tristar. Headquartered at Miami International Airport, it grew into one of the "Big Four" domestic carriers. However, labour disputes, debt, and deregulation pressures led to its collapse, and the airline ceased operations on 18 January 1991 after filing for bankruptcy.
